CANON HISTORY: Sayoko was a classmate of Sakuya Tachibana's at Sazahaibu University, where she studied medicine. They were very close friends, though never officially dating. Upon graduation, Sayoko went on to become a doctor and open her own practice, while Tachibana found himself employed by BOARD, an organization devoted to bettering humanity via biotechnology. Their lives grew apart, each of their respective jobs taking up larger and larger portions of their time.

Tachibana abruptly re-entered Sayoko's life three years later, in search of medical assistance. She ran a battery of tests on him and found that nothing was wrong, though he insisted that he was falling apart and was desperately in need of help. Evasive as he was, she managed to tease out of him that his work at BOARD had involved many experiments that he thought would be for the benefit of humankind, but that it turned out that he was just being used. Unable to get more out of him than that, for he had collapsed exhausted in a chair, she didn't press further. She was simply happy to see him... and happy, in a way, that her presence was somewhere that he felt safe. He begins to return to her and her office regularly, seeking safety and comfort, and she welcomes him in each time.

Little by little, she becomes more involved with the business of the Kamen Riders and their fight against the Undead. When people started coming down with a strange fever and the only commonality was that all of the victims visited a particular cave and were muttering about a monster, she passed information of this along to Tachibana. Though she continued to badger him for information about what was actually going on, he refused and became defensive. Only when he seemed to turn around completely, taking her out on a date and putting on a pleasant act that everything was fine, was he revealed as a Kamen Rider. Attacked by the rampaging Zebra Undead, though she tried to haul him to safety, he produced his Rider System and transformed... and lost almost immediately. Only the intervention of Kazuma Kenzaki, Kamen Rider Blade, saved them.

Unable to hide his dual life any longer, Tachibana confessed everything to her. Her first thought was to apologize, for having not done more to support him despite her ignorance. Her next was to suggest that they both run away, abandoning their jobs as doctor and Rider, and just be happy and safe somewhere far away. It was immediately demonstrated to be impossible, as her phone went off with a call from the hospital. Just as Tachibana had dedicated his life to being a Rider, she had duties as a doctor that could not be abandoned, either. Ending the conversation by assuring her that he would be fine, Tachibana walked away.

When Tachibana returned to her office several days later, making claims that he was cured of his problem, Sayoko was doubtful and uncertain. It seemed too convenient and simple. He wasn't merely energized and positive, but acting in a way that felt out of character. Though he insisted that she should be happy, and that he wanted her to be happy, so she relented somewhat... until she plucked a bit of stray seaweed from his hair. Though he insisted that it was nothing, she kept hold of the piece of seaweed for later, and rode off with him on his motorcycle for another date. Which was abruptly interrupted partway there for, apparently, no reason. Tachibana pulled over, insisted that she get off, and pulled away, leaving her confused and even more suspicious than before.

Pulling some strings at the hospital, Sayoko had the seaweed analyzed. In the process of trying to find more clues, she ran into Kenzaki, and was brought back to the farm that constituted the Rider's home base to discuss things further. She informed them of her suspicions regarding the seaweed being the source of this change in Tachibana, and they confirmed that they too had noticed this change. After leaving the meeting, she's attacked by the Jaguar Undead, wounding her hand. Kenzaki saved her, but dashed off to fight yet more monsters.

Her next encounter with Tachibana was not long after, when she spotted him rushing past on his motorcycle. She shouted at him to stop, and stop he did, though once more he was evasive, this time to the point of being unable to look her in the eye. He asked about her injury, she asked if he's well, and upon his denial that anything is wrong, she asked if it was because of the seaweed. The statement hits a nerve, even as she tells him that she has met Kenzaki and knows more about the situation, but she cannot make him agree to go see his friend Kenzaki or to be honest with her. In the end he leaves, nothing resolved, muttering that he wishes that she could understand before riding off.

Upon returning to her office, she found that test results were in. The seaweed was a rare plant that acts as a neurotoxin over time. Prolonged use will eventually kill the user. She immediately attempted to call Tachibana, only for the window of her office to be blown inward by a blast of force, knocking her to the ground and injuring her further. An unfamiliar voice threatens her, warning her not to get in Tachibana's way, before vanishing. She's left even more confused and afraid, both for Tachibana and herself.... and more resolved to try and help. She contacted Kenzaki and the others again, to share her knowledge and to reassert her resolve to save Tachibana. She then returned to work and to trying to locate Tachibana again in the middle of all this chaos.

Her searching paid off, as she found him once more riding on his bike to another fight. Though this time around, he was more than evasive. He blatantly told her to go away, and she only stopped him from leaving by grabbing on to him. She confronted him with what she knew about the drugged seaweed, and told him that it will kill him in the end. Too deep in the grip of his addiction to it, he stated that he's fine with that, that he liked how it lets him lose himself in the fighting, and that he's happy to give his life like a firework. She countered that she'd rather live as a small flower on the roadside, with him, not needing any of that. And though Tachibana hesitated, this was enough to make him say that they couldn't be together anymore, and he drives off, leaving Sayoko angry and heartbroken.... but not entirely discouraged.

Back in her car, Sayoko tried to trail Tachibana, but lost sight of him. When she pulled over to get her bearings, the mysterious figure that broke her window and threatened her appeared again. With a reminder that he had warned her not to get in Tachibana's way, he fired a blast from his hand that she was too slow to dodge, critically wounding her. By the time that she's found by Tachibana, it was too late for anything to be done, and passes away in his arms, apologizing.

CANON PERSONALITY: Sayoko is a kind and empathetic person by nature. Her choice to go into medicine was one part having the smarts to pursue it and one part wanting to do what she could to help others. She's quick to open her door to those in need, especially those she cares about, and generally tolerant of an enormous amount of patience-trying nonsense. She likes to be useful, and likes to help where she can, and may sometimes choose to do so when it's not in her best interests. A more cautious person may have hesitated to let a bedraggled Sakuya Tachibana into their office late in the evening, but in the end, love triumphs over good sense.

Her favorite pursuits are intellectual ones. She's the sort of person that likes to complete puzzles to unwind, and she prefers a quiet evening in with a book and a warm drink to a wild night out on the town. Her work days are long and her job can be emotionally exhausting, and she tends to use her downtime to recharge her batteries. She wouldn't recognize this as being a form of self-care such as it's known these days, but she knows that she needs to take at least a little time to herself or she'll make herself sick and useless to others. However, it's the uselessness that worries her more than anything else. She never wants to be found incapable of doing something. She enjoys puzzles of all sorts for the challenge, but also because they help keep her mind sharp. They're a practical sort of diversion, for a practical woman. Most of her wardrobe consists of work clothing, and what little she keeps to wear on her time off work is meant to be comfortable, easy to wash, and simple-but-elegant looking. She works hard to maintain a good balance of practicality and appropriately-feminine presentation. She's hardly vain... but she makes a definite effort to not appear sloppy and unkempt.

Sayoko has an independent streak a mile wide. While she's not at all opposed to working with others, or working in teams, she's just very prone to setting off on her own after an idea or goal and losing track of herself in it. She takes pride in being able to handle things on her own... but she also doesn't want to be a bother to others, either. Accomplishing something without the intervention of others validates her self-image as someone intelligent and capable. She is used to others doubting her talents and intelligence for being a woman, and has taken the approach that she must always be prepared to prove any naysayers to be wrong. She works hard to present a confident and composed front to the world, but there's a fine thread of insecurity that drives a lot of what she is. If she's useful to others, then they'll be happy to have her around. If she's capable of helping them, then they'll love her, hopefully.

For all of her positive qualities and useful skills, Sayoko isn't used to the wild life of a hero, or a Kamen Rider, or a Traveler. These are all situations well outside of her comfort zone, and she's not always the most immediately adaptable person. Structure and familiar settings are good. Sudden changes and new places... less so. She'll be jumpy and anxious, and no small amount fearful. She'll be clinging to her closest friends in an effort to find something stable in her life. Additionally, she is still processing what it really means to have recently been killed. The situation that she put herself in is one that she berates herself for in retrospect, and she's still petrified of the implications. For all that she's quick to tend to the needs of others, this is a need of her own that she's not sure how to tend to. She's going to be ignoring those uncertainties and anxieties until forced to do otherwise.

ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW?

M A R K S;
JUSTIFICATION:

Lovers: Much of Sayoko's recent actions and motivations have been strongly influenced by love, and a burning desire to make and hold on to her connection with Tachibana. She has a close bond with him that she refuses to let go of, and stands firm in her efforts to try and save him from himself because of it. Also, I suspect that ol' Psyche would be pleased as punch to mark one-half of a recently-reunited cute couple.

Strength: Compassion and kindness are two core aspects of Sayoko's personality. She's a doctor, and the conflict between abandoning her work and running away with Tachibana to safety are two sides of the same 'must help others' coin. She's mild in her approach, soft-spoken but firm, and patient in dealing with the dilemma that she's found herself in.

Death: By dying before being picked to participate in Synodiporia, Sayoko's story has reached its conclusion. Being in the Arcana's game is an enormous change, one that she'll have to adjust to. She has to come to terms with what having died means, and with not just what others have lost through that, but what she has lost.

VETO: Hermit and Emperor don't seem to suit her at all, so I'd rather they be out of the running. Hermit is too self-centered and withdrawn to represent her well in the long term, and Emperor is too imperious and rigid.
